Injury Attorneys
The number of injury attorneys has increased significantly over the last ten years; an accident attorney will deal in motor vehicle accidents more than anything else. Perhaps the increase in injury attorneys can be attributed to the number of accidents; this has increased by 30% in the last four years alone.
A recent poll has shown that many people regretted their choice in personal injury lawyer. They felt that they could have had a better result in court or a better settlement if their injury attorneys were more experienced in the field that applied to their case.
Injury and Settlement.
Many people who suffer a personal injury as a result of another’s actions take a quick settlement from an insurance company. The problem here is that this settlement is usually much less than what it could be if an accident attorney became involved. Over the last few years there have been many hard hitting radio and television campaigns have raised people’s awareness of this fact. American’s are now much more focused on their own rights in regard to personal injury. Of course, a greater demand for individuals wanting a personal injury lawyer to represent them leads to more opportunities for injury attorneys to work.
I Know my Rights!
These days’ people are aware of their rights regarding personal injury and the law. While most lawsuits relate to motor vehicle accidents, many are over more trivial things. Schoolyard fights are often brought to court if a child is injured. Recently, a woman sued her hairdresser for ruining her color. Some of these cases have given injury attorneys a bad name; they are portrayed as perusing these trivial cases in the name of a buck, encouraging the public to bring matters to court which verge on the ridiculous. In fact, a lawyer in Charlotte recently purchased and expensive packet of cigars which he insured.
He smoked them, then made a claim that they were lost in a series of small fires, which he won. The insurance company had arson charges filed against him. A man in California recently sued his son’s school for not offering him a place on the basketball team, the amount he filed for? 1.5 Million!
Shady Operators.
Of course, the rise of injury attorneys has also led to several less than legitimate operators entering the scene. Some firms may promise excellent results in order to get your business and then not deliver, others promise the ‘no win no charge’ policy, but charge you double what another firm would with an upfront charge. Research is an integral part of assigning an accident attorney to your case, make sure you do yours.
Fees on the Increase.
As demand for injury attorneys has increased, so to have their fees. There is a consensus within the legal field that this is too high, but there is no sign of these costs decreasing in the near future. Often your fees will be a percentage of your settlement, if one is received. There is also usually a start up cost involved plus some incidental administrative fees which will add up before you are issued with a final invoice.
Of course, in fairness lawyers do have a vast academic and professional skill set which is a part of their cost, but some people felt they have been taken advantage of when dealing with a personal injury lawyer. Many people jump in too soon when choosing a personal injury lawyer and end up paying fees greater than the average.
